Dear Falls Church Democrats,
HOLDING UKRAINE IN OUR HEARTS! I know we're all heartbroken and angry at the unprovoked attack on the peaceful people of Ukraine. The scenes are horrific, but I take some comfort in the unity of the world against Putin and in the strong leadership of President Biden. The Northern Virginia Regional Commission has a list of ways you can help here: www.novaregion.org/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=778
MEETING: Our regular monthly meeting will be next Wednesday, March 16h at 7:30 pm by Zoom (please email fallchurchdems@gmail.com for link). All are welcome, whether members or not. Please invite a friend!
NEWS: The 8th Congressional District (CD) Democratic Committee convention was held last Saturday, and nominated 20 people to serve on the DPVA Central Committee, including our own Peg Willingham. Thank you, Peg, for representing us!
The General Assembly is wrapping up its business. For the most part, the House GOP majority attempted to pass a lot of extreme, right-wing legislation that would undermine our public school system and repeal many of the popular reforms Democrats passed the last several years that addressed gun violence prevention, climate change, criminal justice, and worker rights. Fortunately, the Democratic majority in the Senate was able to block most of that legislation. Seeing exactly how the GOP would take Virginia backwards should make us all aware how important the 2023 General Assembly elections will be.
Lastly, Starbucks workers around the nation, and right here in Virginia, have been filing for unionization. This is part of a national movement towards improving worker rights through collective bargaining and unionizing. (Our FCCPC School Board had a preliminary informational discussion about collective bargaining this week, and the Arlington County firefighters have just announced a collective bargaining agreement.) If you'd like to show your support for these efforts, please visit one of the following Starbucks locations in our area that have filed for unionization, and order your drink under the name UNIONYES:
Merrifield: Gallows and Gatehouse, 3046 Gate House Plaza
Springfield: Huntsman Square, 7475 Huntsman Blvd
Leesburg: Leesburg Plaza, 526 East Market Street ... See MoreSee Less

HAPPY FEBRUARY! I hope you’re all staying healthy and warm. With Black History Month, and Valentine's Day, there's much to celebrate!
MEETING: Our regular monthly meeting will be next Wednesday, February 16h at 7:30 pm by Zoom (email fallschurchdems@gmail.com for link). All are welcome, whether members or not. Why not invite a friend?
NEWS: The Virginia Democratic Party reorganization is underway. Now that our local committees have all held their elections, the 8th Congressional District (CD) Democratic Committee will do the same, electing 20 8th CD members to send to the DPVA Central Steering Committee (including one member from Falls Church City, who must be a female to maintain overall gender-balance).
There are many ways you can participate, by serving as a delegate or observer to the 8th CD Convention on March 5th, by running to serve as our member on the 8th CD, or even by proposing a resolution for the committee to adopt. It's such a great way both to see how the Democratic Party works, and to play a role. We highly encourage participation by any registered voter who adheres to Democratic principles. Full information is available on our website, and we'll discuss at our upcoming meeting. www.fallschurchdems.org/wp-content/uploads/va-democratic-party-reorganization.pdf
EVENTS: This month is Black History Month, and Falls Church City has several events to learn and celebrate. I'm looking forward to seeing the diaries and love letters that document the love story of Mary Ellen and Edwin Henderson in "Love Letters and Liniment," at noon Feb. 22 at Cherry Hill Farmhouse. It's a free event. Call 703-248-5171 for reservations.
Also, the Fairfax NAACP general membership meeting is Feb. 24th. If you aren't a member, now is a great time to join, "because freedom isn't free." Visit www.fairfaxnaacp.org for more info.
Lastly, Congressman Don Beyer is hosting a free (outdoor) ice cream event at Lazy Mike's on Sunday February 13th from 1-2 pm, to collect petition signatures for the June 21 primary ballot. RSVP here: act.myngp.com/el/y0KIIRsnGFFgPEWtgn1SJQ==/g9fU_CRy2W1DejpD_xYSnw== ... See MoreSee Less
